The Inside of the Cup…

This morning, I went down to the kitchen in my office and started working on cleaning out my coffee mug of the leftovers from yesterday’s coffee. As I normally do, I ran some scalding hot water into the cup from the tap on the coffee maker, and started scrubbing it out with a scrub brush that sits on the sink. It didn’t take long before I had sloshed some of the hot water out of the cup and onto my hand, which prompted a painful exclamation and some blowing on the burned skin. But then I stopped and looked at the cup and remarked to myself that in order to truly CLEAN the inside of the cup, sometimes some uncomfortable, and even painful circumstances had to occur.

Jesus chided the Pharisees (and indeed all of us) in Matthew 23 about being only concerned with outward appearances, when they should have been more worried about what happened inside of their hearts. Because whatever happens inside of us is reflected on the outside in the way we conduct ourselves. If you are mired deep in sin and have decided to live life for yourself and not for God, then people might hear you speak about God’s creation and blessings, but they don’t see the wickedness you have immersed yourself in. They hear what you intend for them to hear, the words that reflect the outside of the cup, but they don’t see the inner surfaces where the lying and deceptions live, the adultery, the rebellion and pride against God…

Our true faith is reflected in our actions, and the way we conduct our life from the inside out. If you are involved in intentional and deliberate sin while speaking of your faith in God, that is an arrogant display of hypocrisy, and an outright lie. John Bunyan, author of the Pilgrim’s Progress said sin was “the dare of God’s justice, the rape of His mercy, the jeer of His patience, the slight of His power, and the contempt of His love.” The Apostle John says “Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.” 3 John 1:11

Don’t be a fool…don’t show your contempt for God’s love with your actions any longer. Truly wash the inside of the cup, and be free…
